The major crops grown in the district are Red gram, Green gram, Black gram, Groundnut, Sunflower, Jowar and Bajra during Kharif and Rabi Jowar, Bengal gram, Safflower, Cotton, Wheat, Paddy during rabi. Since the pulses occupy the majority of the area in the district and is known as “Pulse bowl of Karnataka”.
•Formation of technical agents: This was for immediate dissemination of technology. Ten technical agents are in action. They are responsible for dissemination of latest technologies of Agriculture/Horticulture and they act as key informers. •Rapid roving survey: Rapid rowing survey will be done during the pick season of pigeon pea for pest incidence. Team involving the officials of KSDA and Agril Scientists will be constituted. Such four teams are made to survey through out the district. The status of pests will be studied and suitable management practices to combat pest will be informed to farmers through media & press coverage. •Formation of Organic Farmers’ Forum: The indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers has lead to the pollution of natural resources. So in order to popularize organic farming KVK took initiative in formation of organic farmers’ forum. Main object of the forum is to produce the organically. KVK scientist will impart the latest knowledge to farmers and such forums are formed in Aland, Afzalapur and Chittapur taluka. Farmers and scientists will meet in one of the farmer’s field every month. •Popularization of Vermiculture Technologies: Every month the training on Vermicompost will be conducted. The impact of training programme is that about 20 large scale (>200 tons/year), 50 medium scale (100-200 tons/year) and 500 small scale (<100 tons/year) vermiculture units are established. •FLD on transplanted pigeon pea: The FLD on transplanting of pigeon pea (BSMR-736) was taken in 10 hectare. This year the area is increased upto 1000 hectare. From this the production is increased from 100 q/ ha to 20 q/ ha.
