The College of Agriculture, Bheemarayanagudi was started in the year 2001-02 with the mandate of imparting quality agriculture education, research and extension to foster the speedy development of North Eastern region of Karnataka, known for its socio-economic and educational backwardness. To accelerate speedy economic development, the largest irrigation project (Upper Krishna Project) was commissioned during the year 1982. The region is characterized by major soil types such as black cotton and red soils in the drier regions and laterites in the transitional zone of the region. Mono cropping viz., pigeon pea, sunflower and Rabi sorghum in the dry lands, sugarcane in the transitional, rice-rice and cotton in the irrigation command remains a dominant cropping sequence. The problems associated with mono crops are well known. The research and extension programmes adopted by the college have immensely benefited the farmers in solving the problems through appropriate participatory demonstrations on resource management IPM and ICM etc. Earlier efforts made through the water management project and research on the control of water logging and salinization in agricultural lands by Indo-Dutch Project and associated network organizations such as Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal, International Institute for Land Reclamation and Improvement, Wageningen, The Netherlands and the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad have developed suitable technologies to mitigate the problems of irrigated agriculture. The college offers four year residential B.Sc.(Agri) degree programme. Although a young institution, 95 students have successfully completed their degree programme since its inception and most of them are gainfully employed all over the country and some of them are pursuing higher education in national and international institutes. Some of our students have the distinction of securing admission in well known learning centres such as London School of Economics, University of Leeds etc. The college has well qualified faculty in imparting quality teaching, research and extension activities. It has well equipped laboratories and well maintained 450 acres of experimental farm (both dry and irrigated). Located on the state highway-19 is 70 km away from the district head quarter, Gulbarga and is well connected by rail and road to different parts of the state and the country.
